Because the model of tumblr is to post mainly lone images, very few of them are credited and their sources can be ultimately very difficult to trace. The way tumblr functions is essentially to publish copyrighted images without permission. This means lot’s of artists work is being published without credit. This is not always a bad thing as artists work (credited or not) is receiving lot’s of free publicity fuelled by the users themselves however  intellectual property laws are supposed to protect this.

Tumblr meetups…

pleasewakemewhentheworldends:

Just found out about tumblr meet ups…there so many in Birmingham

But I’m too much of an awkward turtle to go haha

Social networking sites like tumblr change the way people socially interact. For years the media have been claiming youth are made antisocial and reclusive by the internet but platforms like tumblr allow for strangers to meet it each other online which sometimes translates to in-person. Like in the case of ‘tumblr meet-ups’ and ‘tumblr friends’.

Despite the ban blogs like this can still be readily found on tumblr. The policy would be implemented on a “blog-by-blog” basis so is limited in how effectively it can monitor all of tumblr’s 55.9 blogs.

After realising the huge scope of blogs promoting eating disorders and self harm, Tumblr recently decided to ban these sorts of blogs. They said in a statement on their site ”There are messages and points of view that we strongly oppose and don’t want to be hosting.”

Shane Richmond of The Telegraph wrote “Marc LaFountain, Tumblr’s vice president of support, said that Tumblr wanted to respect freedom of speech but felt that it was important to protect the young people who use the site.”

tumblr is largely used by the teenage demographic

Many users post “personal” content, their own photos, and entries on their lives and feelings. An overwhelming amount of blogs documenting depression and supporting anorexia and bulimia exist of tumblr.

Not a bad day! / on Instagram http://instagr.am/p/KvhpZttDIu/

Instagram, a free photo sharing program that allows users to take, edit and publish photos via smart phones is changing the way people document their lives. In the past to take a photograph, a film camera with an involved developing process or later digital cameras that then needed photos to be uploaded to a computer and published on a separate site would have been used. The accessibility and easy-to-use nature of  Instagram is responsible for it’s huge popularity (50 million users as of March 2012). Instagram photos dominate Tumblr’s user generated content.

People also use tumblr to post personal information that would previously not have been able to be shared on the scale it is today.

Tumblr is also used as a platform for people to publish and publicise their own artwork. This user generated content online replaces older methods artist had used, developing a folio and personally sending it out in order to be seen.
